Welcome (back) to The Honest Liar blog.
In 2008 through 2010, I kept a blog going, admittedly intermittently, writing mostly about skepticism, but also about other subjects of interest to me, from movies to baseball, and even occasionally about magic! With the launch of my newly designed website, I am re-launching the blog as well. The old posts have been moved here — the tags are not in place, but they’re here for the record. (I still like my essay about one of my favorite Coen Brothers film, “A Serious Man.”)
My intention is to post new content twice a month, every other week. If you sign up for the blog’s email list (which is separate from my main list, to which I send new and promotional material now and again), you will automatically be notified whenever a new blog piece is posted, along with a convenient link. That is the entire purpose of your subscription — your email address won’t be sold and you won’t be spammed — along with one added benefit: You get a ten per cent discount on those items in my online store which I personally inventory and fulfill, and for the time being at least, that discount is indefinitely applied for your subscribed email. In the weeks, months, and I hope years ahead, there will be content here of various sorts, but it will not be marketing content — the online shop discount notwithstanding, this blog is not here to sell you stuff or make me money. As I no longer have a regular publishing outlet, the blog becomes the outlet for most of my current writing going forward, until such time some of it is gathered in my next book of essays perhaps. (Occasionally, I will still cross publish elsewhere with contributions to journals or to Vanishing Inc.’s blog site. But most new material will appear here.)
I am already set to go with a couple of brand new magic essays, for starters. I will also be releasing some previously unpublished material, including items written for The Magic of Johnny Thompson that did not make it into the book, along with a never-before-seen trick of Derek Dingle’s, that Derek showed to me some 25 years ago. I’ll also tell some stories, including something about how the actual writing of the John Thompson book came about and unfolded. And perhaps if there is sufficient feedback from readers, I might answer questions here or discuss topics suggested by readers.
Along the way I’m also going to write now and then about other subjects of great personal interest to me, including food — particularly my special passions of Italian cooking and craft pizza, as well as Japanese cuisine. And movies, too. And baseball. And — who knows? Partly all this will depend to some degree on your feedback and interest as well.
Who knows, I might even write a book review or two.
